DisplayLink releases beta drivers for OS X

Posted Mar 31st 2008 12:29PM by Darren Murph
Filed under: Displays, Peripherals
Folks hanging on the Mac side of life have surely been waiting in tense anticipation for DisplayLink to become OS X friendly, for like, ever. As promised, the first drivers have emerged in order to give Intel-based Macs (yes, macbook air and mac mini are included) the ability to connect with up to four monitors over USB. Granted, the beta software has no 2D acceleration and no OpenGL 3D acceleration, but both limitations are known and will hopefully be ironed out in the final release. So, what are you waiting for? Tap the read link below to get your download on — but be sure to read up on the documentation before forging ahead without a care in the world.

[Thanks, Mike]

Apple TV 2.0.1 woes point Fingers On 5GHz Wireless Issue

To date, there has been a number of Apple TV users who have reported that problems with their wireless connections have started to appear, related to 5GHz 802.11n networks only after the installation of the 2.0.1 update. It seems that the update installation has resulted in Apple TV finding difficulty staying hooked up to certain wireless connections, suffering from dropped connections after a while. So far quick fixes include switching to a 2.4GHz network or turning off the “Use wide channels” option of Apple’s Airport Extreme Base Station.

New Kyocera Printhead Technology

Kyocera has successfully developed a new printhead technology which it claims is the fastest high-resolution inkjet printhead for commercial applications in the world. For the uninitiated, the KJ4 Series is capable of pumping out 150 meters per minute on a Miyakoshi MJP600 commercial printer at a resolution of 600×600 dpi. Whipping out my calculator, the final amount is an astounding 1,000 A4-sized pages per minute, which results in a mind boggling 16 pages per second. This feat is achieved courtesy of Kyocera’s proprietary piezoelectric ceramics technology that creates a compact piezo actuator that controls the ink flow, enabling high-speed, high-resolution printing.

Digital Photo To DVD Converter

CDs are old hat, and with DVDs being dirt cheap these days, it makes much more sense to copy all your favorite digital memories onto the DVD format - which is where the Digital Photo To DVD Converter comes in.

This is the compact recorder that effortlessly copies photographs from your digital cameras memory card directly onto a CD for playback on a DVD player without using a dedicated computer. Photographs are converted into MPEG format and immediately burned onto a CD (CD-RW or CD-R required) which can be placed in a DVD player for slide show viewing using your DVD players remote control. An album index enables easy photograph selection prior to full-screen viewing. The recorder can also burn photographs onto a CD in JPEG format, allowing you to view the CDs photographs on your computer. The recorder has both RCA and S-video inputs that allow you to connect it directly to your TV and view photographs either from a burnt CD or from an inserted memory card. It can be plugged directly into your computer for use as an external CD burner or memory card reader using its USB cable. The recorder can accept Compact Flash, Smart Media, Memory Stick, Secure Digital, Multi-Media Card, and Microdrive memory cards.

Hammacher is currently carrying the Digital Photo To DVD Converter for $199.95.

Sorry, Nokia N96 with Xenon flash pic is bogus

I knew it! I knew it was too good to be true! Plus, the presence of that little dual-LED flash alongside the rumored Xenon flash should’ve been my biggest clue. But it is only now that I realize that I’ve actually been staring at the photo of a… fake. This is not a ”leaked photo of the Nokia N96 with Xenon flash.” Indeed, it’s just a regular modified photo.

A Nokia Port forum admin named ExiTuS led me to the light. In a post, he puts the original Nokia N96 “template” photo in comparison with the allegedly leaked image pictured above. Obviously, the Xenon flash was just cropped from another phone, perhaps the N82 or 6220 Classic, and then slapped onto the N96 on top of its dual-LED flash. I sure hope Nokia doesn’t take any design cues from this one. They can do a better job than this.

Steve Jobs Rendered In Apple Products

This portrait of Steve Jobs is made up entirely of Apple products, up to and including the macbook air.

Sure, Charis Tsevis’ portrait (a commission for Fortune Magazine) isn’t the most original of approaches, but the combination of the prosaic mosaic and the Soviet propaganda-style photograph seems somehow appropriate for the notorious control-freak Jobs. Bow down before your master. NOW.

Beamz Laser Harp

This laser harp is not your traditional musical instrument. Rather then you playing the Beamz laser harp you are simply telling it what to do.

The notes are timed to the beat of the rhythm accompaniment and that as you trigger each one, an appropriate musical sequence of notes is played depending upon the rhythm accompaniment’s current key. In short, you’re performing much like a music conductor: you’re calling upon each instrument and controlling the shape of the music, but the beamz software is taking care of making sure everything fits together seamlessly.

The Beamz laser harp connects to your PC via USB and contains 30 songs from a mixture of 19 different genres which are used to provide backing music to your laser creations. Music is pre authored in to loops, rifs, notes and streams and you simple move your hands about with the music to create something good. Hopefully with all that assistance it can make the most tone deaf and un musical type of person (me) more able to play something that sounds good.

The laser harp costs around $600 and is available from Sharper Image.

AT&T to launch Mobile TV in May

AT&T announced it will soon offer mobile television to subscribers. The service, which will be branded “AT&T Mobile TV with FLO,” will be launched in May in partnership with MediFLO USA.

Full-length television shows and sporting events will be offered. Content will be provided from networks and brands, including CBS Mobile, Comedy Central, ESPN Mobile TV, Fox Mobile, MTV, NBC 2GO, and Nickelodeon. AT&T Mobile TV with FLO will be offered on two handsets, including the the LG Vu and the Samsung Access. The company will launch more details about the service at a later date.

Considering that Sprint already offers mobile television, and has been doing so for awhile, it is not too surprising that AT&T has stepped up to the plate to offer the service as well. Mobile television continues to attract more interest from wireless subscribers, and AT&T doesn’t want to lose any subscribers simply because it doesn’t offer the service.
