Memorex pushes out two digiframes for proactive Mother’s Day shoppers

Oh sure, Mother’s Day is over a month away (in the US), but don’t let mama know that reading this post was the only thing that reminded you. If you’re suddenly stricken with panic, take heart, as Memorex has a new duo of digital photo frames sure to make the woman most special to you smile. Purposely designed with “feminine graphics,” the Special Occasions and Floral models both feature 7-inch 480 x 234 resolution panels and USB connectivity. As for the former, you’ll find four interchangeable inserts and a SD / MMC expansion slot, while the latter provides a 4-in-1 reader and oodles of floral patterns. Interestingly, we’ve no idea if either will be seen outside of K-Mart, but both frames can be purchased at the aforesaid retailer next month for $89.99 apiece.

Wii’s Virtual Console hacked on video

by Darren Murph, posted Apr 9th 2008 at 8:06PM
We’ll be straight with you — it’s a bit of a mystery what exactly is going on here, but famed Wii hacker Waninkoko has apparently figured out a way to take Virtual Console titles and play them on another Wii. The good news? There’s a video — which many aren’t hesitating to blast with “fake!” — of the trick posted after the jump. The bad? There’s no how-to in sight.

[Thanks, Craig]

AMD’s Phenom X4 9850 gets pitted against Intel’s Core 2 Quad Q9300

by Donald Melanson, posted Apr 9th 2008 at 6:56PMWe’d already seen a few early tests of AMD’s new top-end Phenom X4 9850 processor, but the folks at Extreme Tech have now taken it upon themselves to see just how well the processor stacks up against Intel’s similarly high-end offering, the Core 2 Quad Q9300. As was suggested by those other reviews, however, the AMD falls behind the (admittedly pricier) Intel processor in just about every respect, including its ability to be overclocked. On the upside, however, that lower cost will likely offset the performance issues for many users, and it does still boast “moderate overclockability” and run cooler than the Intel chip. ExtremeTech apparently isn’t convinced that AMD’s pricing is “sustainable over the long haul” though. For its part, the Q9300 makes the most of its four cores and 45nm manufacturing process, with the only significant downside being that it packs only have the cache of the rest of Intel’s quad core line. That wasn’t enough to stop it from snagging an impressive 9 out of 10 rating, however, with ExtremeTech declaring it “one of the best price/performance CPUs you can find.”

[Thanks, Mike]

Canon Rebel XSi shows up on Amazon with a ship date: April 27

by Nilay Patel, posted Apr 9th 2008 at 8:21PM
We knew Canon’s hot new Rebel XSi was due this month, but it looks like Amazon is once again to the rescue with a specific street date: April 27, which is a bit after the previously-rumored date of the 15th. That’s what, just 5,000 pennies a day to get one by launch? Totally doable.

PS. -Don’t forget, if you can’t wait that long, we’ve got a hands-on gallery right here.

[Thanks, Dan]

Better U.S. Carbon Measurements

In case you were up late at night wondering what a profile of the continental US’s carbon output was like, wonder no more. The Vulcan Project measures CO2 levels at finer time and distance scales than have been documented in the past. Here is one such map that has come out of this project.

They also have a ton more data and analysis in various formats on their site and even a video that they stuck up on YouTube.

Samsung T539 Review - Digital Trends

Digital Trends reviews the Samsung T539 and writes, “The flashless 1.3 MegaPixel camera is okay. On the upside, Samsung can automatically upload your new photos onto a personal album website or shoot the photos to another person as an attachment. It makes it easy. The other multimedia features were consistent, but unremarkable.”

Asus feels pressure as HP intro’s Mini-Note

Asus has decided to release the 8.9-inch Eee PC in the second half of April, instead of the originally planned May/June launch. This decision, which comes at the eleventh hour was due to the recent announcement of competing UMPC’s, the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC and a soon-to-be released model from Acer.

The early launch of the 8.9-inch Eee PC will mean that it will be released without the Intel Atom processor. The original launched models will will use Intel’s older-generation dual-core ULV processors, but Asus is still expected to ship its Intel Atom processor based 8.9-inch Eee PC in June. Changes in prices and the exact release date of the 8.9-inch Eee PC are yet to be confirmed.

iPhone 2 chipset details discovered

AppleInsider reports that the ZiPhone creators have discovered a few lines of code that refer to a 3G chipset in the latest iphone firmware. Tucked within firmware beta 5A240d are references to Infineon chipset SGOLD3H, an unsurprising choice as the current iPhone uses the older Infineon SGOLD2.

The new chipset will serve a variety of functions such as application acceleration and A/V processor. It will also enable support of GSM 3G access, meaning HSDPA will be on the next iPhones. It supports up to 7.2Mbps over HSDPA, but unfortunately does not support the newer HSUPA standard.

Oh well, at least it’s better than EDGE.
