Rumor: iPhone 2 to Have a Broadcom GPS Chip?

We’ve seen all kinds of rumors, sometimes, we publish them because they might have a hint of truth, but we’re publishing this one because it seems ridiculous:

“Tonight, based on a recent informal conversation my Dad had with his friend’s wife who works at Apple, he told me the next iphone is likely to have GPS. Usually, my Dad’s friend’s wife doesn’t let Apple product info slip out until right before a new product announcement is made. This being the case, I’m betting GPS will be included with the 3G iPhone… and soon”

That was the good old “a friend of a friend told me…”. Note that the iPhone might very well have a GPS (we think it will). Others have speculated that Broadcom might be the chip. If that’s the case, we think that it may be the Broadcom BCM4750 G-GPS chip. At 35 square millimeters (total solution), it is certainly small enough to fit in.

De Grisogono Meccanico DG all-mechanical digital watch

by Paul Miller, posted Apr 11th 2008 at 3:21AM
See, now we’re torn. Do we spend our imaginary rainbow dollars on that Real Crystal LED Watch concept we saw the other day, or do we pretend like we could ever scrap together enough pennies to afford this very real De Grisogono Meccanico DG timepiece? The watch is apparently the first all-mechanical digital watch — no LED trickery here — and is sure to cost a fortune. Only 177 of ‘em are being built.

Wooden Laptop Concept by Fujitsu

This is what Fujitsu thinks a wooden laptop should look like. Obviously, this is a brainstorming session on “how can we jump on the Green wagon and charge a little more?”

I actually like it when it is closed, but absolutely hate it when it is open. I don’t know if customers would actually pay for something like this, or for another “bamboo laptop”, but I did not see something that I would buy. Would you pay for something like this? Fujitsu (in Japanese)

Asus ready to ship the R700t GPS

Asus recently came out with a GPS called the R700, and new reports indicate that they are coming out with a new, but similar model called the R700t. No word on exactly what the “t” is for, but I think it stands for traffic, which means it would offer traffic message channel capability. In fact, that is one of the main differences between the R700t and the R700.

In addition, the R700t features with a 4.3-inch touch screen, Bluetooth capabilities, and runs on a 1300mAh Li-ion battery. It also uses a SiRF Star III GPS chip, runs on a Samsung 2440 processor, comes with a light sensor, anti-echo functionality, microSD card slot for additional memory, USB connection and 64MB of RAM. Furthermore, it uses iGO 8 technology, which provides the device with maps of Europe, and even comes with 3D rendering of popular places and can even act as a portable media player and has support for AAC, MP3, WMA, MP4 and H263 files. The R700t is already available online and retails for around $300-$350.

Wolfenstein 3-D on the Sidekick LX

An anonymous tipster sent us a copy of this video to show what the Sidekick LX is capable of. Whether or not this will ever see the catalog is unknown as I’m sure it would take some lawyers and licensing. But regardless it’s a great example of what the Sidekick LX actually is capable of in the gaming arena.

Limited edition gunmetal gray MGS4 PS3 coming to America, hearts flutter

by Nilay Patel, posted Apr 10th 2008 at 6:46PM
It’s no secret that we’ve been drooling over all the hot limited-edition Metal Gear Solid 4 swag that Sony and Konami are dishing out in Japan, but it looks like a select few in this country will be able to score the baddest of them all: the gunmetal gray PS3 / MGS4 bundle with matching DualShock 3. Yep, it’s coming Stateside on June 12th like the rest of the MGS4 editions and the standard 80GB PS3 / MGS4 bundle, but you’d better get in line now, because we’re told it’s going to be extremely limited in availability, and we’re calling one. We can do that, right? Say yes.

IBM rolls out systems based on “fastest chip on Earth”

by Donald Melanson, posted Apr 10th 2008 at 5:22PM It’s not the first time IBM has tossed around “world’s fastest” language when discussing its Power6 processors, but the company’s now found reason to boast again, with it recently announcing that it’s released some new supercomputers based on its new “world’s most powerful microprocessor.” Getting that distinction is IBM’s latest Power 575 “Hydro-Cluster” supercomputer which, thanks to some nifty in-rack water-cooling measures, is able to accommodate the company’s speedy new 5GHz Power6 processor. According to IBM, that processor should deliver “two-to-three times the performance per core of comparable HP or Sun processors,” while still requiring only about the same amount of energy as previous Power5 processors. For its part, Sun is a bit skeptical IBM’s focus on speed, with a company spokesperson telling the San Francisco Chronicle that “it’s an easier marketing message to deliver to say that faster gigahertz means a faster processor,” adding that Sun instead focuses on multithreading to make its processors more efficient.

Nikon P80 Camera with 18x Optical Zoom

When it comes to digital cameras, it’s fair to say that everybody likes the idea of a powerful zoom! That’s why Nikon added a whopping 18x optical zoom (27-486mm equivalent) that could prove very useful in many situations (wildlife, crowds…). Of course, with such a zoom comes some form of image stabilization to compensate for your body’s motion. Also, we like the fact that you can shoot 30 consecutive images at 13 frames per second. The Nikon P80 is a 10.1 Megapixel camera.

World’s Largest iPod Dock

No, that’s not a swimming pool accessory, though I’d probably use it as a floater anyway.

This enormous inflated device is actually an iPod dock called the iBig Box. But it’s not just any iPod dock–it’s the world’s largest ipod dock, as you can see on the picture (no, it’s no Photoshopped). It’s equipped with a couple of speakers, fabric controls, and of course, the dock itself. It’s not just iPod you can stick in the dock, other audio devices could be used as well. iBig Box costs 30, which isn’t so bad, considering it can double as your bed.
