Samsung B300 Clamshell Handset

Samsung’s B300 cell phone features both internal and external screens, with all the most basic information being displayed on the external screen. It is a dual-band handset that comes with a CSTN display (sucks to use this under bright light), and measures a pocket-friendly 87mm x 45mm x 18.6mm, targeting prepaid users as its main market mover. Hopefully it will be released soon in time for the summer holidays so that parents can always pick up a cheap handset for their kids who have been pestering them long enough.

US Pays $90 For Wii Fit

The Wii Fit has been slated for a May 19 release in the US, with a $89.99 price tag…tagging along. If you’re one of the lucky first 1,000 people in the New York City area who aim to pre-order Wii Fit with a $5 deposit at the Nintendo World store in Rockefeller Plaza will be able to pick up a limited edition Wii Fit with a reproduced Shigeru Miyamoto signature right smack on it. Guess you’re better off learning how to forge Shiggy’s signature if you plan to auction this faux rarity on eBay.

Hive Speaker System

The Hive is but a simulated surround sound speaker system that is way more interesting to look at compared to a standard sound bar, featuring a hexagonal honey comb pattern that features pivoting cells that form a truly customizable audio experience without the hassle of worrying about cables or cords. The Hive will need only two at most - one connected to the nearest power outlet while the other is hooked up to your spanking new home entertainment system.

Hackers put iPlayer on PS3

The BBC iPlayer has become a very popular media streaming application since its launch. Offering up TV from the last 7 days from its 8 channels, giving you a 2nd chance to see your favorite shows online.

News last week saw plans to allow iPlayer access via a Nintendo Wii offering users an easy way to get the shows they want on their TV rather than just their computer screen. This was thought to be a coupé for Nintendo managing to be the only next-gen console with the service, but that was not the case for very long.

Hackers have managed to get the iPlayer running on a playstation 3 and made the service available by visiting http://ps3iplayer.com/ using your PS3 console web browser. The hack was done purely to demonstrate how easy it is to get the service running on the console and urge for an official release to Sony’s machine.

The BBC are not thought to be the ones holding up the service’s roll out on to the other consoles. Instead, Microsoft and Sony are holding back because of a lack of control over the content being viewed.

I’m not sure why Sony and Microsoft have such an issue with the iPlayer content. It may be that content aimed at adults could be viewed by children, but if it’s ok with Nintendo, why not Sony and Microsoft? Hopefully the matter will be resolved before too long and all 3 machines will have an official version of the iPlayer.

I’d be interested to know if people can get the iPlayer running through their PS3 and online outside of the UK. Currently I believe the service is only available within the UK through web browsers.

Palm Centro Review - MobileTechReview

MobileTechReview has a review of the Palm Centro And writes, “Though only 1.3 megapixels, the camera did an excellent job with the image processing and we got very pleasing colors and a natural sharpness in well lit scenes. There’s less noise in the AT&T version’s photos than Sprint’s for indoor shots, and indoor shots are acceptable. Photo resolutions are 1280 x 1024, 640 x 480 and 320 x 240. There are few settings available, and these are: effect, date stamp, shutter sound on/off and prompt sound and review period. You can save photos to a card and send them via MMS…There are separate icons for camera and camcorder, though you can switch between the two modes once in the application. Video resolutions are 352 x 288 and 176 x 144, and you can record audio (or not), disable the shutter sound, use a limited palette of effects (normal, black & white, sepia) and save video to a card. Video colors are decent, but there’s a great deal of motion blur and moderate noise. Once again, for a $99 PDA phone, we won’t complain: the camera is decent and colorizes (outdoor shots only) in a pleasing fashion.”

Blockbuster offered to buy Circuit City. Zah?

News came out today that Blockbuster offered to buy out Circuit City at a premium over their then valuation. Beats me why they would do this. CC turned them down (also another head-scratcher), b/c they said they were unsure about the financing.

Why isn’t Blockbuster going after Netflix. Seems that their biggest problem.

Ben Heck outdoes himself (again) with the Apple IIGS laptop

We’re still reeling from Ben Heck’s amazing PS3 laptop (which we’ll be auctioning off for charity soon) but the man just hit us again with this amazing Apple IIGS laptop. Based off an original IIGS motherboard, the one-of-a-kind laptop features a 15-inch color screen, custom acrylic keyboard, a CompactFlash-based hard drive, and — most importantly — a glowing blue IIGS logo that flashes yellow during disk access. Hit the read link for tons more pics and a hot demo video — you won’t be disappointed.

Walk - Dont Walk New York Chair

The Walk - Dont Walk chair is built from authentic New York City signs. What is ultra cool is that the signs still work via a remote control. The remote control is included which allows you to switch on and off the signs when needed. Maybe they should read, Sit - Dont Sit. Power is provided by a standard 115V wall outlet. Bulbs are standard too making them easy to replace when needed. The legs of the seat are made from steel street sign brackets and are galvanized and fitted with self levelling feet.

The Walk - Dont Walk chairs are each built by hand and still contain all the scuffs and stains of living in New York for a number of years. If the old beat up signs do not take your fancy then you can opt to go for a squeaky clean look which will see the chair completely resprayed. The seating surfaces are made from one inch thick polished resin glass which sits on a felt suspension.

Shipping is the killer here as it will take around 14 - 16 weeks for delivery although a price tag of $3700 might be considered more of a killer.

Home-made iMacmini

The iMacmini sounds like an abomination, and the finished DIY product is nowhere near the polished masterpieces from Cupertino but it does offer a rather interesting angle where an old Windows-powered laptop experienced a renaissance after being stripped apart and rebuilt from ground up into an aluminum case, accompanied by side-mounted USB ports. While what you see above looks like OS X, it is actually Flyakite OSX, a free “transformation pack” which mimics the look of the Mac GUI. Truly, this is a labor of love.
