Say hello to the Intel Nehalem processor series
The Intel Nehalem series of processors will replace the current Core line-up and start shipping later this year.
This new series provides greater power management by allowing individual cores (processors) to be turned off or on as needed. So, for example, if the current task only needs two processors of a quad-core system, two of the cores can be powered down until they are needed later.
Nehalem will also include an improved virtualization technology called VT-d that Intel says doubles the performance of virtual machines. The version of these chips destined for the desktop will be called Core i7.
